Kings Point, NY - May 20, 2016 - The American Merchant Marine Museum, on the grounds of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), will open a new exhibit, "How to Abandon Ship: The Sinking of the SS Robin Moor, 1941," today.

The museums newest exhibit, “How to Abandon Ship: The Sinking of the SS Robin Moor, 1941,” retells the story of the first American freighter sunk by a German U-boat, a full six months before the U.S. actually entered World War II. Photos, models, and artwork reveal the story of the sinking, the miraculous survival of all passengers and crew despite several weeks in open lifeboats, and how it impacted American attitudes toward joining the war.

The exhibit remains open from May 20, 2016 to March 31, 2017. Museums hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10:00am to 3:00pm, except during Academy vacations and the month of July, when it is closed.

The American Merchant Marine Museum on the grounds of the US Merchant Marine Academy is located at 300 Steamboat Road, Kings Point, NY 11024. For more information, visit the American Merchant Marine Museum here or contact via email.
