Legislator Anker Attends Opening of Rocky Point Hiking Trail Dedicated to Ray Corwin
Suffolk County, NY - May 11, 2018 - On Saturday, April 28th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended a trail opening and dedication ceremony at the trailhead in Rocky Point. The trail, which covers over 12 miles and connects Rocky Point and Yaphank, was named in memory of Ray Corwin, a nature and hiking lover who passed away suddenly in 2010.
Ray Corwin served 17 years as the first Executive Director of the Central Pine Barrens Joint Planning and Policy Commission, and 25 years as Vice President of the Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference. The newly opened Ray Corwin Trial is part of a larger trail that Corwin had hoped to see created, which would connect Shoreham to Smith Point County Beach.
“Ray Corwin was an incredible member of our community who passed away far too early,” said Legislator Anker. “He had a great love for our county’s open spaces and trails, and it was a privilege to attend the opening of this new trail in his honor.”
The trail is a project of the Central Pine Barrens Joint Planning and Policy Commission and the Long Island Greenbelt Trail. The two organizations are also working with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, the Suffolk County Water Authority, the Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Conservation, and the Town of Brookhaven.
