Albany, NY - May 10, 2013 - Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today thanked and acknowledged the brave sacrifice and service of the twenty-seven soldiers assigned to the New York Army National Guard's 27th Financial Management Company who leave for twelve months of active military duty-including at least nine months in Afghanistan today.

 

The Soldiers will leave for Fort Dix, New Jersey following the ceremony at American Legion Post 131, where they will train for 45 days before heading for Afghanistan.

 

“I thank these brave soldiers for their immeasurable dedication and commitment,” Governor Cuomo said. “The long periods away from home can be difficult for soldiers and their families but they understand the role of protecting our freedom. Do your duty, make us proud, and come home safe and sound.”

 

The farewell ceremony took place at 10-20 Clintonville Street in Whitestone, Queens. Major General Patrick Murphy, the Adjutant General of New York was present to see the Soldiers off.

 

The 27th Finance Company's Soldiers are trained to disperse funds to units and military personnel within a combat zone. They can work from one location or conduct split-unit operations. The units Soldiers handle pay issues as well as making payments to contractors. Paying local contractors in a timely manner is especially important in low-intensity counterinsurgency operations.

 

This is the second time the 27th Finance Company has deployed overseas. In 2008/2009 the unit served in Iraq.
