Suffolk SPCA: Rocky Point Man Accused of Abandoning Cat at Local Hotel

Rocky Point, NY - May 3, 2018 - On Friday, April 27, 2018 a Rocky Point man was charged with animal abandonment by Suffolk County SPCA detectives after an extensive investigation.
 
Suffolk County SPCA Officers responded to a call from a local hotel that David Mathews who occupied the room, left the hotel, abandoning his cat. The cat was discovered by housekeeping in the bed's boxspring several days after Mathews left the hotel. The hotel staff had been supplying food and water to the cat after it was discovered.
 
Mathews, 38, was charged with one (1) count of abandonment and was arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on April 28, 2018. Abandonment is a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for up to one year and/or a fine of not more than $1,000.
 
Chief Gross said that animal cruelty will not be tolerated in Suffolk County. If you witness any incident of animal cruelty or neglect in Suffolk County please contact the Suffolk County SPCA at (631) 382-7722. All calls will be kept confidential.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
