NWS Warns of Potential Flooding on Long Island

Written by Christian Abbatecola  |  29. April 2014

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook, Flood Watch, and Coastal Flood advisory for much of Long Island’s shoreline. Warnings come as an unusually strong high pressure system moves offshore and a warm front is traveling northeast toward the region. Persistent strong winds will occur as a result, and a new moon will increase the tides and rainfall, producing potential minor flooding across a wide area of shorelines.

The Coastal Flood Advisory will be in effect from 7:00 PM April 29 through 12:00 AM April 30 for southwestern Suffolk and southern Nassau, and from 11:00 PM through 2:00 AM for northwestern Suffolk and northern Nassau.

The Flood Watch will be in effect from 8:00 PM April 30 to 12:00 PM May 1 for Suffolk, and from 2:00 PM April 30 to 12:00 PM May 1 for Nassau County.

NOAA reports that minor inundation is likeliest to occur in low-lying areas, especially those with poor drainage, and cautions those living in places liable to flood to be prepared in case any flooding does occur.

Temperatures are expected to hover around the low-50s for much of the Island today and tomorrow before jumping into the 70s on Thursday. Parts of eastern Suffolk will likely stay in the 60s on Thursday.
