Senator Kaminsky Applauds Transparency Initiative For Cleaning Product Chemicals
Long Island, NY - April 28, 2017 - State Senator and Ranking Member of the Environmental Conservation Committee Todd Kaminsky applauded a new initiative requiring manufacturers of cleaning products to disclose their chemical ingredients. The new requirements, established by Governor Cuomo and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, include the hazardous chemical 1,4-Dioxane.
“Consumers deserve to know what chemicals are in the everyday products they buy from the local store, and I applaud Governor Cuomo for taking action,” said Senator Todd Kaminsky. “The next step to protect Long Islanders is to prevent these chemicals from seeping into our water supply, which is why I have sponsored legislation to ban 1,4-Dioxane from cosmetic and cleaning products. Albany cannot be complacent when it comes to protecting the health of New Yorkers, and I will keep fighting to protect our water supply.”
Under the program, manufacturers of cleaning products sold in the State of New York are required to disclose the ingredients of their products on their websites and identify any ingredients that appear on authoritative lists of chemicals of concern. Public comment on the form and guidance will be accepted through June 14, 2017.
Senator Kaminsky’s legislation, S5450, prohibits the sale of all products containing 1,4-Dioxane, and requires manufacturers to use alternative chemicals. Manufacturers who demonstrate that the use of a product does not result in exposure and that the removal of 1,4-Dioxane isn't financially or technically feasible can apply for a one year waiver.
