Farmingdale Elementary Students Paint Portraits of Courage
Farmingdale, NY - April 26, 2017 - More than 400 Farmingdale School District students, 5—10 years old, at Woodward Parkway Elementary School recently met local United States Military veterans—some who served abroad during World War II. This project was originally conceived by Woodward Parkway Elementary School Art Teacher Ricki Weisfelner, who has been using President George W. Bush’s book, Portraits of Courage, to inspire students to learn about the individuals who shape the tapestry of our nation. As part of the project, students painted portraits of their special guests.
While the veterans sat for their portraits, they told students personal stories of their service in active duty. Many of the visiting veterans were Farmingdale School District graduates and have family connections to students and staff in the District.
This initiative was one of many of the Farmingdale School District’s innovative educational programs designed to immerse students in history and literature while letting them explore their creativity.
