Stony Brook, NY - April 19, 2016 - Legislator William R. Spencer, M.D. recently lectured to the students in the Parameters of Social Welfare Policy II class at the Stony Brook School of Social Welfare. The Legislator focused his lecture on strategies for building support on an issue and how to effectively work with local elected officials to bring about positive change.

The students participated in break-out session where they engaged in a mock debate on the current proposal to reduce plastic bags in Suffolk County.  The students dove onto the debate and exchanged in lively and well-thought out arguments that gave them practical insight into the governmental process of crafting policy. Legislator Spencer commented, “The class did an outstanding job seeing this issue from various perspectives. I would like to thank Dr. Farrington for allowing me to serve as a guest lecturer for the afternoon; it was a pleasure to be with students who are eager to make a positive change in their community.”
