Field of Dreams Proposed to Replace Blighted Property

Middle Island, NY - April 19, 2016 - Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker has proposed acquiring the blighted Kmart property in Middle Island, located on Middle Country Road across from Artist Lake, to create a community park with athletic fields. Currently, the owner is in the process of demolishing the building structure, which has remained vacant for over a decade. Legislator Anker has proposed working with Suffolk County, the Town of Brookhaven, community organizations, including the Longwood Youth Sports Association (LYSA) and Middle Island Civic Association, and the current owner to create a community park that would help decrease crime and improve the quality of life for residents.

“This blighted parcel has the potential to be transformed into a much needed community park that will include athletic fields, open space, and provide a place for residents to enjoy the outdoors,” said Legislator Anker. “I look forward to working with the community and the owner of the property to make this Field of Dreams come true.”

Legislator Anker has received a letter of interest from the owners expressing willingness to sell a portion of the 74 acres. Legislator Anker is looking to acquire about 40-45 acres for active parkland and open space. The remaining 30-35 acres could still be used for development. Legislator Anker will soon submit a resolution to appraise the site, which will need to be approved by the Suffolk County Legislature and County Executive Steve Bellone.

“The land acquisition process can be lengthy, sometimes taking over a year. With the support of the community, I will do everything in my power to facilitate the acquisition of this important parcel that will become a community centerpiece,” said Legislator Anker.
