Suffolk County, NY - April 19, 2017 - State Supreme Court Justice Fernando Camacho today sentenced a Queens man convicted of aggravated vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a fatal crash and tampering with evidence to the maximum prison sentence of 12 to 36 years, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said.

Oniel Sharpe Jr., who witnesses reported weaving in and out of traffic at speeds surpassing 90 miles per hour, rear-ended a SUV early on the morning of July 12, 2015 on the Southern State Parkway. The force of the impact caused the SUV’s gas tank to explode.

The fire killed Ancio Ostane, 37, and his children, 8-year-old Andy and 4-year-old Sephora.  The wife and mother of the victims, Lucnie Bouaz-Ostane, managed to get out of the vehicle and survived the crash but she was unable to save her children and husband.  During today’s sentencing, Ms. Bouaz-Ostane addressed the defendant, telling Sharpe, “You destroyed my life.”

Sharpe, 26, left the scene and was arrested by New York State Police when he showed up at his mother’s home in Rockville Centre four hours after the crash when his blood-alcohol level had dissipated to .06%. (The charge of aggravated vehicular homicide Sharpe was convicted of alleged Sharpe was operating his vehicle in an intoxicated condition.)

District Attorney Spota said Lucnie Bouaz-Ostane showed remarkable courage in attending the sentencing.

“She was willing to bear the pain of reliving the memory of the night her family perished to tell the defendant in person of the devastation he caused by ignoring the consequences of his behavior.”  DA Spota said.  “This case should serve as a reminder during this spring’s season of proms and other social activities that two children and a young father died because of a young man’s reckless decisions under the influence of alcohol.”
