87 Year-Old Shelter Island Priest Dies from Injuries Sustained During Home Burglary, Officials Report

Shelter Island, NY - April 17, 2018 - Suffolk County Police Department Major Case detectives, in conjunction with the Shelter Island Police Department, are investigating a March 2018 burglary during which Rev. Canon Paul Wancura, the 87-year-old victim, eventually died yesterday of injuries sustained by an unknown assailant.
 
Shelter Island Police officers responded to check on the welfare of an elderly resident living on Oak Tree Lane on Monday, March 19, 2018 at approximately 12:40 p.m. Upon the arrival, Wancura was discovered injured and in need of immediate medical attention. Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services responded and Wancura was transported via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident.
 
Wancura eventually died of his injuries on Monday, April 16, 2018.
 
Major Case Section detectives, in cooperation with the Shelter Island Police Department, are actively investigating the circumstances of this incident and are seeking the public’s help for any information that can lead to the identification of the suspect(s).
