Nassau County, NY - April 16, 2014 - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced the publication and release of the Nassau County Department of Social Services (DSS) comprehensive annual report highlighting the major programmatic initiatives implemented by the department thru January 1, 2014.

According to County Executive Mangano, “Given the challenges posed by today’s economic conditions, our Department of Social Services is making a positive difference in people’s lives by helping the neediest of our residents and their families. I commend the Commissioner and all the DSS staff for their outstanding work and dedication. The Department’s programmatic and fiscal achievements are numerous and I encourage residents to view the annual report which is available on line at www.nassaucounty.gov, under Social Services in the Departmental listings.”

Mangano continued, “I want to especially point out that the aggressive efforts of the DSS Office of Investigations uncovered $18.2 million in recipient fraud, waste and abuse. My administration remains committed to rooting out and referring for prosecution those that try to cheat the system to take money away from the neediest of our citizens.”

The 2012 annual report details programmatic and fiscal accomplishments in all DSS units and services, including but not limited to housing and homeless prevention, Public Assistance and Medicaid, welfare fraud and abuse, child care, Child Protective Services, Foster Care, Adult Protective Services, and Family and Domestic Violence.

DSS Commissioner Dr. John Imhof encourages residents to view the report online and noted that “All of our combined services and programs at DSS reach over 250,000 Nassau County residents a year.
