Bellmore, NY - April 15, 2016 - According to research over the past ten years, those who volunteer tend to have a longer life span and experience a more positive mental and social state-of-being as they age.

According to one of the studies conducted by UnitedHealthcare, volunteers reported these positive results:

  • 96% say that volunteering enriches their sense of purpose in life
  • 95% say that they are helping to make their community a better place
  • 94% say that volunteering improves their mood
  • 80% say they feel they have control over their health
  • 78% say that volunteering lowers their stress levels
  • 76% say that volunteering makes them feel healthier

An important finding by the Corporation for National & Community Service showed that, “Volunteer activities can strengthen the social ties that protect individuals from isolation during difficult times, while the experience of helping others leads to a sense of greater self-worth and trust.”

Long Island Crisis Center, the 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week suicide prevention and crisis intervention hotline, is currently recruiting volunteers to participate in its Counselor Assistant Training Program.

The Crisis Center encourages you to feel good about yourself and to help others, too, by enrolling in its free, Counselor Assistant Training program that takes place over 3 three-hour sessions at its office in Bellmore.  May’s training will be held on 3 successive Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on May 7th, 14th and 21st.  June’s training will be held on 3 successive Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on June 8th, 15th and 22nd. Completion of the Counselor Assistant training is a prerequisite for the Crisis Center’s Counselor Training, which begins in September.
