Birthday Caravans: Long Islanders Celebrate While Keeping Safe Social Distances

Written by Lon Cohen  |  09. April 2020

Birthday caravans have sprung up as a new trend all across the region.

Social media is lighting up with videos and pictures as people try to find new and fun ways to share experiences, celebrate joyous occasions, and spread optimism while everyone is doing their best to stay put.

Kathleen Reisman probably thought she’d be spending her 50th birthday quarantined inside with her family. The big Five-Oh is a milestone for anyone but she was resolved to spend it the way most people were: sheltering-in-place, perhaps a cake or a few FaceTime birthday well-wishes..

Apparently, her community had a different idea.

On a beautiful April day Reisman  watched as a caravan of cars streamed by her house with signs, beeping and making noise to celebrate her big day.

“Who lives in the most caring and loving community?” she asked in a post on Facebook about the birthday caravan. “We do!!! Just want to share my 50th birthday quarantine experience. We need some uplifting videos and messages to brighten our days during this awful time.”

Reisman shared her video with LongIsland.com, which you can watch below.

“I am forever thankful and will cherish this moment forever,” she said. “My heart is filled with love and joy.”
