William Floyd Schools Announces Tangier Smith Elementary School Science Fair Winners
Mastic Beach, NY - April 9, 2018 - Students at Tangier Smith Elementary School recently participated in the annual school-wide science fair with first-place winners from each grade level earning the opportunity to have their projects entered into the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) Elementary Science Fair on Saturday, May 5. Student work will also be displayed at the William Floyd School District annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Symposium on April 26.
Tangier Smith Elementary School has had success in the county-wide science fair in the past. In 2016, Gregg Ross Jr., then a first grader, won first place countywide for his project, “Egg Count.”
Congratulations to the following students who were selected as the overall winners for their grade level:
Kindergarten: Ethan Behrens – Animal Tracker, (teacher) Ellen Flynn-Nigro
- 1st grade: Gabriella Montalbano – Tommy’s Time Table, (teacher) Barbara Draghi
- 2nd grade: Angelise Bayley – Rainbow Matter, (teacher) Deirdre Dentel
- 3rd grade: Lea Molfetto – K’Nex Bridge, (teacher) Kristi Dunne
- 4th grade: Colin Smith – Water Purification, (teacher) Karla Elarde
- 5th grade: Ania Ellis – Who’s Smarter? (teacher) Alison Montalto
Each year, the BNL Science Fair attracts more than 500 projects from Suffolk elementary school students for this contest with one student from each grade level winning a medal and a banner to be hung in their school for their entire school to see.
