Astoria Man Arrested by Suffolk Cops For DWI, Fleeing Police, Reckless Driving

Setauket, NY - April 5, 2019 - Suffolk County Police today arrested an Astoria man for driving while intoxicated after he fled police and drove the wrong way on a highway in Setauket on Wednesday, April 3.
 
A Sixth Precinct police officer observed a 2005 Kia Sorrento being operated without headlights on Route 112, near the intersection of Route 347, in Port Jefferson Station and attempted to pull over  the vehicle at approximately 2:20 a.m. The driver of the Kia, David Bonilla, fled police and drove westbound in the eastbound lanes of Nesconset Highway in Setauket and Lake Grove.
 
Fourth Precinct officers observed the Kia and stopped the vehicle on southbound Sunken Meadow Parkway in Commack at approximately 3:10 a.m.
 
Four police cars were damaged during the incident. Two Fourth Precinct police officers were treated for minor injuries and released from Stony Brook University Hospital.  Bonilla was treated and released from Saint Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown.
 
Bonilla, 21, of Astoria, was arrested and charged with Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Officer, Reckless Driving, Driving While Intoxicated and Resisting Arrest. He was also issued numerous summonses for vehicle and traffic violations. Bonilla is being held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on April 4.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
