Island Harvest Receives Top Ranking from National Charity Rating Agency

Written by Don Miller  |  04. April 2014

Mineola, NY - April 4, 2014 - Charity Navigator, the nation’s leading evaluator of charities, recently announced that Island Harvest Food Bank, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, has earned Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating, the highest score possible. The designation was based on “Island Harvest’s sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency,” according to Ken Berger, president and chief executive officer of Charity Navigator.

Charity Navigator highlights the good work of efficient, ethical and open charities in order to provide donors with information necessary to give them confidence in the organizations they choose to financially support.

“Receiving four out of a possible four stars indicates that your organization adheres to good governance and other best practices and consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way,” said Mr. Berger. “This exceptional designation from Charity Navigator differentiates Island Harvest from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.”

Approximately 95 cents out of every dollar donated to Island Harvest goes directly to services that assist more than 300,000 Long Islanders — including 110,000 children — who face hunger every day. According to Charity Navigator, only a quarter of the charities it evaluates receive the 4-star designation, an indication that Island Harvest outperforms most other charities in the United States.

“Island Harvest’s generous supporters have every right to expect that their donations, no matter how large or small, are being used to further our mission of  providing essential food support to the growing number of Long Island families struggling with hunger,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and chief executive officer of Island Harvest. “Charity Navigator’s rating not only recognizes the organization’s fiscal accountability and transparency, but validates the exceptional work being done each and every day by a dedicated corps of volunteers, staff and board members.”
