Police: Deer Park Man Chased Security Guard with Hunting Knife Over Parking Dispute

Massapequa, NY - April 2, 2019 - Seventh Squad detectives report the arrest of a Deer Park man for an incident that occurred on Sunday, March 31, 2019 at 10:00 am in Massapequa.
 
According to detectives, John Harvey, 38, became involved in a dispute with another driver over a parking space in the Shop Rite parking lot, 5500 Sunrise Highway. A Shop Rite security representative observed the ongoing verbal disturbance and attempted to intervene. The argument became escalated and Harvey ran back to his car, emerged with a large hunting knife and chased the security guard through the parking lot. After the security guard dropped his backpack while running away, Harvey picked it up, retreated to his car and drove off.
 
Seventh Precinct officers, who were dispatched during the initial incident, responded to the scene, located Harvey who was still in the parking lot, and placed him under arrest. The security guards backpack, which was discarded by Harvey in the parking lot, was recovered.
 
Harvey is charged with Robbery 1st Degree, Menacing 2nd Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th Degree. He was arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on 4/1/2019.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
