Growing Your Business Online Inexpensive and Simple.

Written by Denny Ballas  |  30. March 2013

Spring is here and it’s time to do some spring cleaning with your online marketing strategy, so let’s talk about Google, search engine results pages and the benefits of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

If one thousand people type in “Long Island electrician” they’ll get back thousands upon thousands of search results in return, yet it’s the number one results spot that will receive close to 50% of those one thousand potential customers.  If you aren’t on the first page of Google, you simply won’t be getting any of that traffic.  Because of this, getting on the first search engine results page of Google isn’t just advantageous, it’s crucial.

Did you know that over 70% of people search the web to research a product or company before they make their final purchase?  As we know, most of these consumers are finding this information not just via Google, but on Google’s very first page.  As Will Ferrell recently tweeted, “When looking something up on Google, if it’s not on the first page of search results then it doesn’t exist and my journey ends there.”  To his Twitter followers this was an amusing witticism, but to businesses it can present itself as a sobering realization: a lack in search engine ranking can easily affect a business’ successes and failures.

Frequently, we’ve heard owners complain about the economy’s negative effect on their business.  However, the good times are a direct result of what you’ve accomplished during the bad times and the bad times are a direct result of what you’ve accomplished during the good times.  So, what can be done?

Search Engine Optimization is the most efficient, successful and cost-efficient marketing tool a company can use to drive high-quality traffic to their website.  SEO’s job is to analyze the way that search engines search relevant topics using specific search terms.  SEO campaigns increase the amount of quality traffic to a website, converting browsers into new leads, quotes and sales.  About 80% of sales and leads are generated from positions 1-5 on the first search engine results page, while the next 15% are from positions 6-10.  Each page has 10 positions, leaving only a meager 5% over for search engine results pages that go beyond it.

I’m sure any internet marketer will agree with me when I say that, if you have a business on long island, and you’re looking to grow the revenue of your company, make sure that your exposure on the internet is where it needs to be, as chances are you may be losing out on some business, that your competitors are receiving instead of you.
