Meet the Mets With the LIRR!

Written by Long Island News & PR  |  27. March 2014

New York, NY - March 27, 2014 - The LIRR will be ready with extra service for opening day at Citi Field when the New York Mets kick off the season on Monday, March 31, and take on the Washington Nationals at 1:10 p.m. in their 2014 home opener.

With speedy, reliable half-hourly (or better) service that lets you avoid game day traffic and parking fees, the Long Island Rail Road will get you to Citi Field in time – and in good spirits! – for all Mets home games.

Direct train service to the ballpark is available from Penn Station, Woodside, and all stations on the Port Washington Branch. Those traveling from Long Island or southern Queens on other branches can reach Citi Field by changing trains at Woodside, just a five-minute ride from the stadium. Fans from N.Y.C. or New Jersey can board trains at Penn Station, which is just a quick 19 minutes away on the LIRR. The ballpark is just 17 minutes from Great Neck and 27 minutes from Port Washington.

“With a tough winter behind us, we are all looking forward to Opening Day at Citi Field. So leave the driving to us,” said LIRR President Helena E. Williams. “If you try the LIRR’s fast, convenient service to Citi Field, we think you’ll come back and use the train the next time you want to catch a Mets game. The LIRR is the fastest, most hassle-free way to get to Citi Field for all Mets home games.”

Regularly scheduled Port Washington Branch trains will stop at the Mets-Willets Point Station throughout the regular season for all games, which means that depending on what time the game is being played, between 32 and 42 trains will stop at Citi Field for each game. For weeknight games, the LIRR is adding an extra Penn Station-bound train, stopping at Mets-Willets Point at 6:22 p.m. Schedule summaries valid through the systemwide timetable change on May 19 are below, and specific train times are available on the Mets-Willets Point special timetable, available here

Fares
Off-peak tickets are accepted on all trains to baseball games, except for weeknight trains scheduled to depart Penn Station between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. The one-way off-peak fare from Penn Station is $5.75, and the peak fare is $8.00. The off-peak fare from Great Neck through Port Washington is $8.00.

On weekends, fans coming from Penn Station, Woodside, Auburndale, Bayside, Broadway, Douglaston, Flushing-Main Street, Little Neck or Murray Hill can save money by using CityTicket, which is just $4.00 one way. CityTicket cannot be purchased on board a train, and is valid only on the day purchased.

Fans traveling from branches other than the Port Washington Branch who change at Woodside will not need a separate ticket for that leg of the journey. Since Mets-Willets Point is located in Zone 1, tickets to Woodside or Penn Station are valid to Mets-Willets Point as well. However, passengers must retain their ticket stubs and inform ticket collectors of their intention to travel to Mets-Willets Point Stadium. Customers must hold onto their tickets, which may be collected at Mets-Willets Point after they disembark.
The railroad’s special Family Fare is a great way for future big leaguers to see their favorite team. Children ages 5 through 11 can ride for only $1 each (in each direction) on PM peak and off-peak trains, when accompanied by an adult paying the regular fare. Parents with monthly or weekly tickets just pay for the children. Up to four children can travel with each parent (or guardian, 18 or older) at this special rate. Children under 5 ride for free at all times.

Yankees Fan?
Yankees fans from Long Island and Queens, the best way to get to Yankee Stadium is on the LIRR! Just catch any train to Penn Station. Then walk one block east to Herald Square, where you can catch the uptown B or D subway (depending on what time the game is being played) right to 161st Street-Yankee Stadium. Or you can catch the uptown A, C or 1 from Penn Station and change to the B or D at 59th Street-Columbus Circle.

Accessibility for the Disabled at Mets-Willets Point
The Mets-Willets Point Station is not accessible to the disabled. The New York City Subway’s Mets-Willets Point station is accessible via the Queens-bound local platform, with an ADAcompliant ramp connecting to the sidewalk on the south side of Roosevelt Avenue. LIRR customers with mobility impairments who are traveling to see the Mets should travel to Woodside Station. At Woodside Station, which has elevators, customers should transfer to a Flushing-bound 7 Subway Line subway train to the Mets-Willets Point subway stop, and then use the ramp to reach Roosevelt Avenue, across from the ballpark. To return to Woodside after the game, customers with mobility impairments should board the 7 Subway Line subway and travel one stop east to its end point, the Flushing-Main Street Station. There, after a brief wait on the train, the train will head west to Woodside. This is necessary due to the location of the ramp, which will only permit access to the eastbound platform.
