A new code will require landlords of vacant properties in Port Jefferson Village to display artwork in their windows. The village announced the new rules on Facebook.

“This initiative will result in the beautification of vacant properties while helping to promote our local artists with prime visibility,” the post read. “It's a WIN WIN for now as a short term solution coupled with our long term plan and will help us reach our revitalization goals!”

A link directs artists and property owners to resources on the village website. The new code addresses concerns that storefront windows that are vacant or boarded over have a negative impact on the aesthetic in the village’s business district.

Owners have until May 1 to comply with the new code. The village said that all properties owners will receive due notice.
