Mangano Hosts Spring Break Activities For Children At Garvies Point Museum And Preserve

Nassau County, NY - March 19, 2014 - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that Nassau County will host Spring Break Activities from Tuesday, April 15th through Saturday, April 19th at Garvies Point Museum and Preserve. The event schedule is as follows:

Tuesday, April 15th:
SAND-CASTING – 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Make unique work of art using sand and seashells to have a beautiful keepsake of the shore.

Film: “Eyewitness: Seashore” (35 mins.)

GEOLOGY WALK – 2:00 p.m.

What’s that rock? Where’d it come from? Come find out and learn more down to earth topics. Walk around preserve plus a visit to shoreline.

Wednesday, April 16th:
NATURE SAND-ART – 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Film: “MicroCosmos” (75 mins.) – Incredible footage of the hidden insect world.

LIVE ANIMALS – 12:30 p.m. & 1:30 p.m.

Enjoy our live animal presentation to observe and learn about animals that live right here in our own “backyard.” You will see the well-known Great Horned Owl, Eastern Box Turtle, Eastern Screech Owl and more! In cooperation with Tackapausha Museum & Preserve.

Thursday, April 17th:
BIRD-HOUSE CRAFT – 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Make a “green” bird house using recycled materials that your backyard birds will love!

Film: “Birding for Kids” (30 mins.)

BIRD WALK – 1:00 p.m.

Learn how to find and identify our favorite birds of field and woods during their spring return. Plus learn how to use binoculars. Feel free to bring your own, we have some available if needed.

Friday, April 18th:
SPRING NATURE WALK – 11:00 a.m.

Join us on a naturalist led spring walk through the woods as we discover the rebirth of nature that occurs every year.

NATURE MOSAIC CRAFT – 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Film: “All About Animal Adaptations” (23 mins.)

Saturday, April 19th:
DINOSAUR DAY – 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Explore the world of dinosaurs! Learn about dinosaurs from our Geologists, see and touch real fossils, try out our fossil “dig,” plus make your own “fossil” to take home. $5.00 per person

Film: “Bizarre Dinosaurs” (50 mins.)

*All programs and crafts are included with museum general admission ($3.00 for adults and $2.00 for children 5-12 yrs.), except where noted for Dinosaur Day. Don’t forget to visit the museum’s gift shop full of souvenirs, toys, fossils, rocks and minerals, and books for all ages!
