PSEG Employees Empower Long Island Students to Achieve

Written by Long Island News & PR  |  16. March 2015

New York, NY - March 13, 2015 - Today, PSEG Long Island worked in partnership with Junior Achievement of New York to deliver the second of a two-day corporate community service initiative to power up the financial future of local Long Island students. PSEG Long Island employees donated their time, energy, and expertise to introduce more than 160 local elementary school students to the concepts of earning, spending, sharing, and saving money, to help them grow into confident and self-reliant citizens. PSEG Long Island’s first corporate volunteer initiative with Junior Achievement of New York was a rousing success for both the volunteers and the schools that benefitted from the support provided by local business role models, and vital financial literacy and college and career readiness programs provided through the JA New York/PSEG Long Island partnership.

Today, the William Rall Elementary School in Lindenhurst, opened its doors to welcome more than 20 PSEG Long Island employees who taught 14 JA classes over a two-day period. On March 25, Tooker Avenue Elementary School in West Babylon, hosted the first PSEG Long Island/JA volunteer event. Students were excited to have the volunteers in their classes, and were eager to learn about their local and regional economies, and their role in making it work for them and their communities. The volunteers led the students through a series of fun, engaging, hands-on lessons, which helped students to understand the difference between needs and wants, and setting short and long-term goals. They also learned about different businesses and industries that help drive their local economies.

“Our partnership with PSEG Long Island is a great example of how JA excels in bringing together business, education and the community to help young people acquire the skills and knowledge which will make them better informed, better prepared and more adaptable to our changing economic environment,” said Joseph Peri, president of JA New York. “Together we give kids a greater chance to be successful and to reach their full potential in school and in life.”

JA programs empower students to make connections between what they learn in school and how it can be applied in the real world – enhancing the relevance of their classroom learning and increasing their understanding of the value of staying in school. With the support of our corporate and community volunteers, we give young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices.

”PSEG Long Island is committed to serving our Long Island communities.  Our dedicated employee volunteers are proud to partner with Junior Achievement of New York,” said Jorge Jimenez, director of Customer Experience & Utility Marketing at PSEG Long Island. “Together, the PSEG Long Island and Junior Achievement teams are building a brighter future for Long Island.”
