Two Men Arrested After Fleeing from Police and Crashing into a Police Vehicle

Brentwood, NY - March 13, 2017 - Suffolk County Police today arrested two men who fled from police in a stolen vehicle and struck a marked police unit this afternoon.

Terrance Jones was driving a 2004 Nissan Altima westbound on Pine Aire Drive, east of Sagtikos Parkway in Bay Shore, at approximately 2:00 p.m. A Third Precinct Patrol officer responding to a call of a suspicious vehicle attempted to initiate a stop.  The driver fled and a pursuit was initiated. The vehicle had been reported stolen.

Near Long Island Avenue and Heartland Boulevard, the Nissan made a U-turn and struck a marked Third Precinct unit that had been following the suspect’s vehicle.  Jones and his passenger, Daniel Austin, fled in the Nissan and proceeded to crash again at Route 111 and Spur Drive South. The men then fled on foot and were captured a short distance later by Third Precinct police officers.

Two officers were transported to a local hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released. Jones and Austin were not injured.

Third Squad detectives charged Jones, 18, of Bay Shore, with Grand Larceny 3rd Degree, Assault 2nd Degree, Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree, Criminal Mischief 4th Degree, Resisting Arrest and Unlawfully Fleeing the Police. Austin, 18, of Bay Shore, was charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd Degree.

Jones and Austin will be held at the Third Precinct and are scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on March 14.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
