Stabilization Project to Help Protect TOBAY Beach Dunes

Written by Lon Cohen  |  16. March 2021

All along the South Shore, dunes are threatened by storms, impacting our precious beaches. Studies have shown that dune grass provides  a natural shield that is perfect for withstanding storm surges and high winds. To stabilize the dunes on TOBAY beach, the Town of Oyster Bay is looking for volunteers to help plant new grass during Dune Day, set for Saturday, March 27 at 10am.

“The Dune Stabilization Project brings together residents of all ages in an effort to protect and preserve our beautiful shoreline and environment by planting stalks of dune grass,” said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino.

The event will take a Covid-safe approach as volunteers are asked to wear a mask and remain socially distant for the duration of the event.

Residents of Oyster Bay interested in volunteering or seeking additional information, may contact the Department of Environmental Resources at (516) 677-5943, via email at environmental@oysterbay-ny.gov.
