Uniondale Man Arrested for DWI and Leandra's Law

NCPD reports the arrest of a Uniondale man for Aggravated Driving Intoxicated – Leandra’s Law that occurred on Sunday, March 12, 2017 at 4:23 am in Hempstead.

Hempstead, NY - March 12, 2017 - Nassau County Police Department reports the arrest of a Uniondale man for Aggravated Driving Intoxicated – Leandra’s Law that occurred on Sunday, March 12, 2017 at 4:23 am in Hempstead

According to police, a 2016 Honda CRV was observed travelling southbound on South Franklin Street making a left turn onto Peninsula Blvd at a high rate of speed.  The vehicle crossed two lanes of traffic and failed to maintain its lane.  A Vehicular Traffic Stop was conducted on Peninsula Blvd and Whitson Street.  The Highway Police Officer observed the driver to have blood shot eyes, slurred speech and a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath.  After an investigation, defendant Kevin Gamez, 20, of Uniondale was placed under arrest. Also observed in the center console of the vehicle was a clear plastic zip lock bag with two baggies inside with a green leafy substance believed to be marihuana.  A 15 year old female (no relation to the defendant) was observed sitting unrestrained in the rear passenger seat. The 15 year old was released to her parents. 

Defendant Gamez is being charged with Aggravated Driving Intoxicated (Child 15), Driving While Intoxicated, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Failure to Stay in Single Lane, Unlawful Possession of Marihuana, Uninsured Motor Vehicle, Passenger without Restraint (less than 16 yrs. old) and Speeding.  He will be arraigned on Monday, March 13, 2017 at First District Court, Hempstead.
