Governor Cuomo Launches New Hunting, Hiking, Fishing and Recreational Projects for the State
On Friday Governor Andrew Cuomo announced 50 new outdoor access projects that connect hunters, anglers, bird watchers and outdoor enthusiasts to 380,000 acres of untapped land in the state. More than $6 million will be used for hunting, fishing, boating, and hiking projects. Trails and launches will also be made available to anyone with disabilities for the first time.
"Expanding access to more of the beautiful lands that New York has to offer will open recreational opportunities that for too long have not been available to our residents and tourists," Governor Cuomo said. "These projects will enrich the outdoor activity offerings, improve the quality of life in our communities, and position New York State as a recreation destination."
These plans support the NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative which boosts tourism opportunities throughout the state by improving recreational areas for out-of-state sportsmen and sportswomen. Now the initiative will include streamlining of hunting and fishing licenses, reducing license fees, and improving access for fishing and hunting opportunities at various sites across the state.
The access projects will open up several spots on Long Island throughout Nassau and Suffolk. Suffolk County residents will see the Rocky Point Natural Resource Management Area, the Kings Park Unique Area, and the Otis Pike Preserve. Over in Nassau the Underhill Unique Area will open up.
This project is one of many which are aimed to help make New York a world-class destination throughout the year. Anyone who is a lifetime holder of sporting licenses, Lifetime Empire Passports, and NY Safe Boating certificates will have the chance to have all these licenses condensed onto their New York State Driver’s license. The license will feature pictures of deer and fish for these lifetime licensees.
Adventure license plates will be given free of charge to anybody purchasing lifetime licenses in 2014. Nine plate designs are available to display a lifetime commitment for hunters, anglers, and park visitors.
You can also now buy a Lifetime Empire Passport for $750 with a special offer. This one-time fee gives open access to those looking to experience New York State parks. Anyone purchasing the passport will be able to select a free week of camping, a free round of golf for four, or a $100 State Parks gift card.
