Rocky Point/Miller Place, NY - March 8, 2017 - The Friends of St. Patrick are pleased to announce that the 67th annual Miller Place-Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Day Parade is scheduled for Sunday, March 12, 2017 starting at 1:00 p.m. sharp.  It is with great pride that the committee has named local hero Joseph A. Cognitore to be the Grand Marshal at this year’s parade.

Joseph A. Cognitore proudly served in Vietnam from April 1969 through March 1971, where he held the ranks of Acting Platoon Sergeant and Acting Platoon Leader.  For his valor on the battlefield and for his service to country, he earned the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge, as well as the National Defense, Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign, and Air Medals.  He has been a member of the VFW since 1973 and serves as Commander of VFW Post 6249, Rocky Point.
 
For his services to the community, Mr. Cognitore has been honored by local legislators and civic associations.  Having distinguished himself in both military and civilian life, he was inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame in 2005.
 
Under his direction, the Suffolk County Veteran Commanders joined with the Long Island Home Building Corporation to provide homes for wounded veterans and their families.  Most recently, Mr. Cognitore and the developer and owner of Landmark Properties were named Times Beacon Record News 2016 People of the Year for building and giving homes to veterans.
 
Mr. Cognitore was instrumental in the creation of the Diamond in the Pines 9/11 Memorial, and in the German Shepherd Bronze Statue to honor the nation’s service dogs.  Additionally, he helped the local Historical Society on the creation of the Civil War Memorial at Depot Park.  Joe Cognitore is a moving force in supporting veteran’s causes, as well as local groups   Because of his dedication and commitment to the country and to the Rocky Point community it has been said the Joe Cognitore personifies everything that a citizen should be in terms of national and local service.  
 
The community is invited to celebrate and honor Mr. Cognitore at the Friends of St. Patrick annual cocktail party on Sunday, March 5, 2017 from 4-8 p.m. at the Grand Ballroom of East Wind Caterers in Wading River.  Tickets are $40 and include a traditional Irish dinner, Irish music, dancing and moderately priced drinks.  Tickets will not be available at the door; they can be purchased in advance at the Hartlin Inn, McCarricks Dairy or the Law Office of James E.
