St. Catherine of Siena All Dressed in Blue for Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
Smithtown, NY - March 7, 2014 - The best way to prevent colorectal cancer is to get screened. There are often no signs or symptoms of colorectal cancer. If left undiagnosed or undetected, colorectal cancer can spread throughout the body. The Department of Health and Human Services states that colorectal cancer screening tests can detect cancer early, when treatment is very successful. People over age 50 are at highest risk for colorectal cancer. Other risk factors include smoking and having a family history of colorectal cancer. Everyone can take these healthy steps to help prevent colorectal cancer: Get screened; Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke; Get active and eat healthy.
To increase awareness of colorectal cancer screenings, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center is proudly participating in Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Throughout the month, St. Catherine will be offering free informational materials and will host a free seminar, featuring Co-Director of St. Catherine’s Colon and Rectal Program Jill C. Genua, MD, on Saturday, March 8th at 10:00 AM. The free seminar will be held at St. Catherine’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Care Center where Dr. Genua will talk about prevention, early detection and treatment options. The Colon and Rectal Program at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center is staffed with board-certified colorectal surgeons, both male and female, who are experts in the use of minimally-invasive techniques to treat colon and rectal disorders.
