Huntington, NY - March 6, 2017 - Huntington Town Councilmembers Mark Cuthbertson and Susan A. Berland took part as “Celebrity” readers at Countrywood Primary’s Community Read-in.  The program, which is an initiative of the Countrywood Primary School’s PTA, emphasizes the importance of literacy in the school. This year’s program was held in honor of the famous children’s book author, Dr. Seuss’ 113th birthday on March 2, 2017.

Councilman Mark Cuthbertson was the mystery guest reader for Mrs. Cariello’s second grade class and chose to read from one of Dr. Seuss’ best sellers, “The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.”

“This was no time for play. This was no time for fun. This was no time for games. There was work to be done,” Councilman Cuthbertson joyfully read aloud. “It is so important as a parent and as a local elected leader to support child literacy. The early childhood years are crucial in children's literacy development and it’s so especially important to make the time to read with them. I would like to thank Countrywood Primary’s PTA, School Principal Barbara A. Kenny and South Huntington Superintendent Dr. David Bennardo for the invitation and opportunity to participate in this year’s program,” added Cuthbertson.

Councilwoman Susan Berland read several of her own childhood books to Ms. Joanne Sanchez’s Kindergarten class.

“It was great being a Community Read-in Guest Reader and sharing the magic of books with the children at Countrywood Primary Center,” said Councilwoman Susan A. Berland. “I enjoyed reading two of my favorite childhood books to Ms. Sanchez’s Kindergarten class. I commend the Countrywood Primary Center and South Huntington School District for promoting reading, especially books that support the school’s themes of character education and being a safe, respectful and responsible community member.”
