Islip Town Urges Residents to Follow Important Town Codes During Winter Storm Thor

Written by Long Island News & PR  |  05. March 2015

Islip, NY - March 4, 2015 - As Islip Town continues to battle severe winter weather, residents are reminded that there are specific codes in place to address the proper removal of snow and ice, as well as codes relating to the parking of cars during snow emergencies. All codes MUST be followed to ensure the health, safety and welfare of residents, as well as plowing personnel. Failure to do so, especially during a winter weather emergency, is subject to penalties. Residents and business owners are also asked to be mindful of storm drains and fire hydrants in front of their properties that may be blocked with snow – this is an important safety precaution, and snow around drains and fire hydrants should be cleared.

Chapter 59-3-11(B) of the Islip Town Code mandates that no motor vehicle may be parked on a residential street or on any street in a business district. Cars are permitted to be parked on lawns until the snow emergency is over. Any violations of this code will be enforced.

In addition, Chapter 47A-17 of the Islip Town Code states that each owner or occupant of any house or other building, any owner of any vacant lot, and any person having charge of a church or any public building in the Town of Islip shall keep sidewalks in front of the lots, buildings or houses, free from obstruction by snow or ice and icy conditions. This code also prohibits depositing snow on any street, whether from driveways and/or sidewalks. Also prohibited on any Town roadway, according to Chapter 58-4, is the placement of any structure such as a basketball hoop or anything else that would obstruct plowing operations. Residents and property owners are required to follow all codes strictly.

Residents and business owners should call 631-224-5600, to report any weather related issues. Power outages and downed power lines should be reported to PSEG’s customer complaint line at 1-800-490-0075.

The Town’s inventory of snow removal equipment and vehicles are ready to be deployed, along with all private vendors, and plowing, salting and sanding of all Town roadways will commence as necessary. The Town is also closely monitoring potential flooding.

It is recommended to check the Town’s website at www.townofislip-ny.gov for updates, closures, and important announcements during all weather emergencies, and to enroll in the Town’s informational E-alert program, also available on the website.
