Written by Long Island News & PR  |  05. March 2015

Riverhead, NY- March 3, 2015 - Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker’s resolution to establish a School Traffic Zone Safety Commission was approved at the March 3 General Legislative meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature.

With the failure of the school traffic camera initiative, Legislator Anker, being a strong voice and advocate on public safety issues, drafted a resolution to bring together government departments and school representatives to address school traffic safety concerns. The commission will collect data and recommend proactive measures to address specific school district concerns located throughout Suffolk County.

“The safety of our children is my top priority and more must be done to address high traffic accident areas near schools,” said Legislator Anker. “The School Traffic Zone Safety Commission will review data, and provide guidance and recommendations for our public safety departments and school districts.”

After conducting a local traffic safety study in the Sixth Legislative District, Legislator Anker was made aware of specific high accident areas near school districts. The commission will focus on similar issues in an effort to address traffic safety issues throughout Suffolk County.

“I want to thank Legislator Anker for recognizing the critical need to keep our children and all pedestrians safe when walking on our sidewalks and along our roadways,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “Suffolk County has implemented several successful driver awareness programs that have reduced the number of serious vehicular accidents in the County. The Suffolk County School Zone Traffic Safety Commission will become another avenue that we anticipate will play another vital role in improving the safety and well-being of our residents.”

The commission will be made up of nine members, including the Chairperson of the Education
and Information Technology Committee, the Chairperson of the Public Safety Committee, the
Presiding Officer of the County Legislature, the County Executive, a representative of the
Suffolk County Police Department, the Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of
Public Works, the President of the Suffolk County Superintendents Association, a representative of the Suffolk County Regional Parent Teacher Association, and the Executive Director of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association.
