North Babylon, NY - March 2, 2017 - The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) is pleased to announce that the Long Island Region, in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), will conduct the annual Spring Family Freshwater Fishing Festival at Belmont Lake State Park on Saturday, April 1, 2017.

Festival activities will be held from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM and are appropriate for people of all ages.

Prior to the festival, Belmont Lake will be stocked with close to 4,000 brown, brook, and rainbow trout by the DEC, OPRHP, and the Natural Heritage Trust. The high concentration of stocked trout, in addition to the lake’s large yellow perch population, should provide a perfect opportunity to introduce families and friends to the wonderful sport of freshwater fishing. The freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers age 16 and older will be suspended for this event.

Fishing activities offered will include open fishing, fishing instruction, fly casting demonstrations, and a fish cleaning station. In addition, display areas will be set up by the DEC and local fishing clubs.

Loaner rods and free bait will be available free of charge but the supply of loaner rods is limited so participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if possible.

Children’s activities will include hands-on educational displays by the DEC Education Unit, and a “Spring Fling” casting contest where children will have a chance to win a prize which will be supplied by DEC’s I FISH NY Program and The Natural Heritage Trust. Other event contributors include The Fisherman Magazine, 102.3 WBAB Radio and 106.1 WBLI, Renewal by Andersen and Suez Water.

Belmont Lake State Park is located at Exit 38 off the Southern State Parkway. A vehicle use fee of $8 will be in effect. Parking is free for Empire Passport holders. This event is rain or shine.
