Snow Strikes Again, but Delays Minimal Across the Island

Written by Christian Abbatecola  |  18. February 2014

Another round of snow started falling on Long Island this morning, but so far it has not caused too many inconveniences. Most schools were already scheduled off for the week, leaving only a couple to deal with the winter weather. Roads remain open with many major roadways having been kept fairly clear, and the LIRR reports only a single delay on the Port Jefferson line where an equipment malfunction forced the cancellation of the 6:45 AM train to Hunterspoint. The 6:57 took on two additional stops to accommodate those who would have taken the 6:45.

Despite the relatively easy start to the morning, however, the National Weather service has issued a special weather statement cautioning drivers to be careful on the road.

“Pockets of light to moderate snow will track northeast across the area over the next couple of hours,” the statement reads. “Some of the heaviest activity will be capable of producing one-half to one-inch an hour rates. Snow will accumulate on areas roadways...especially secondary roads as well as walkways...making for slippery travel.”

Fast falling snow could yet prove troublesome during the morning commute, but after a few inches have accumulated the precipitation is expected to begin changing to rain around 2 PM. That rain coupled with a high of 39° will help wash away much of the snow that has fallen this morning, and over the next couple days the weather will help clear some of the mess left behind by the last several storms.

The NWS is presently predicting a high of about 43° for tomorrow with a 40% chance of rain, a high of 46° on Thursday with a 50% chance of rain overnight, and a high near 53° on Friday with a 70% chance of rain during the day.
