Zombie buildings are a dangerous nuisance on Long Island. Properties essentially abandoned by their owners become eyesores in their communities after years of neglect - racking up building code violations and sometimes attracting vagrants who set up camp sometimes with damaging results.

 

On Tuesday, February 9, the Town of Brookhaven demolished two abandoned and boarded up buildings that were in violation of numerous Brookhaven Town building codes and the source of resident complaints. The properties were located on Montauk Highway in North Bellport.

 

The buildings were demolished by Brookhaven Town in accordance with Chapter 73 of the Town Code which provides a “fast track” to rid neighborhoods of unsafe structures, according to a statement released by the town.

 

Cost of demolition and debris removal is the responsibility of the property owner and the town places a lien on the property that is then placed on the tax bill. Suffolk County reimburses the town and then they collect the money from the property owner.

 

“We are keeping our promise to redevelop the Montauk Highway corridor in North Bellport by removing these two eyesores and making room for businesses that will benefit the community,” said Town Councilman Michael Loguercio, who was on hand during the demolition. “I will continue to work with the Town’s Law Department to identify and demolish more derelict buildings until it’s all cleaned up and improved for the residents who call North Bellport home.”
