SCPD Officer & Good Samaritan Rescue Disabled Elderly Woman from House Fire

A Suffolk County Police Second Precinct officer and a Good Samaritan rescued an elderly disabled woman in Eaton’s Neck this afternoon.

Update - February 11th, 2016 - The Good Samaritan has been identified as Joseph Cartelli, 55, of Kings Park.

Eaton’s Neck, NY - February 11th, 2016 - A Suffolk County Police Second Precinct officer and a Good Samaritan rescued an elderly disabled woman in Eaton’s Neck this afternoon.

Second Precinct Police Officer Matthew Funaro responded to a 4:45 p.m. call of a house fire at Old Winkle Point Road.  When Officer Funaro arrived, he observed flames and heavy smoke emanating from the second floor of the home.

The officer entered through a sliding door and located the resident, Helen Morris, on the first floor of the home in the living room. Officer Funaro, along with a Good Samaritan who was performing work in the home, carried Morris, who was in her wheelchair, outside to safety.

Eaton’s Neck Fire Department and Northport Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire. Morris, 88, was transported to Huntington Hospital where she was treated for minor, non-life-threatening injuries.

Arson Section detectives are investigating the cause of the fire. The investigation is continuing.
