Nassau BOCES is paving the way for the future of school busing on Long Island. Thanks to a generous Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Grant of $145,000 through the Clean Bus Program that the Nassau BOCES Transportation Office earned, along with a $100,000 Voucher from the NYSBIP (New York State Bus Incentive Program) through NYSERDA (New York State Energy and Research Development Authority) the agency has begun replacing all its fossil-fueled busses with electric vehicles (EV). Nassau BOCES also received $55,000 from NYSBIP through NYSERDA for the electric charging station.
The new EV buses are not only essential for the environment, but they also fulfill a New York State mandate for school transportation. These grants mark a pivotal step in the commitment Nassau BOCES has to clean energy, they also align with a New York State (NYS) mandate. Over the next 10 years, the state requires that all school districts transition their fleets from emissions-based vehicles to zero-emission electric buses. Starting in 2027, all new bus purchases must be electric, with the goal that 100 percent of NYS school bus fleets be fully electric by 2035. While the greater goal is cleaner air, a lower carbon footprint and a positive environmental impact, the mandate also has the significant benefit of saving districts considerable money by eliminating the ever-increasing cost of fossil fuel.
Denise Gillis, Director of Nassau BOCES Business Services, said, “Transitioning to electric vehicles is an important operational change for our department. The grant supports our efforts to comply with the state’s EV requirements. The new buses are expected to reduce emissions and contribute to improved air quality on Long Island.”
Nassau BOCES was able to purchase its first state-of-the-art EV bus for less than half the price. In all, the EPA grant covered more than $300,000 in costs, giving the agency a head start on driving the future of school transportation in Nassau County.
“Electric buses create a safer environment for our students,” noted Nakia Jackson, Supervisor of Nassau BOCES Transportation Services. “EV buses are quieter, enabling our bus staff to pay better attention to the students and ensure a safe, well‑managed ride for everyone on board.”
