Winter Storm Warning In Effect For Wednesday Night Into Thursday Afternoon As Niko Approaches

Written by Brian Re  |  08. February 2017

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for both Nassau and Suffolk County, as well as the TriState Region beginning late tonight, and lasting through Thursday afternoon. After initial estimates suggested that Long Island would be receiving about 6 inches of snowfall during tomorrow's storm, parts of Long Island may now receive up to 12 inches.

The snow from Winter Storm Niko will fall at the heaviest rate during the night, with heavy wet snow likely to transition into lighter, powered snow during Thursday afternoon. There is uncertainty about the amount of snow that may fall in the area, but preparations for at least 1-2 inches per hour should be taken.

Dangerous travel conditions are expected for Thursday morning, leading to a very messy commute and a strong likelihood of school closings. Visibility will be between ½ and ¼ mile, perhaps less, with wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour.  Along Long Island's coasts, this could mean intense, blizzard-like conditions.

Temperatures will remain chilly throughout Thursday, with temperatures in the high 20s or low 30s expected in the morning and high 20s during the afternoon.
