Looking for fun and productive ways for your children to spend their time during the upcoming winter break? The East End Arts School has just opened registration for its Spring 2013 classes and is offering educational and entertaining “Winter Break” arts and music programs for children Feb. 19-22, 2013.

During the “4 Days of Fun Art Projects” series, themed around diversity, children will mold clay mandalas from Asia, create works of art inspired by African Kente cloths, design South American masks and make paint from things found in nature.

With the use of computer music software and a piano, students in “The Virtual Orchestra Songwriting Workshop” will learn how to write their own songs, create a melody and add words to them.

Other spring semester offerings for children include lessons in drawing, collage, mixed media and acting, as well as home school art and theatre classes.

Among the many art offerings available for adults are Asian brush painting, barn painting, introduction to watercolor, abstract painting, an open pastel workshop and a bookmaking workshop. In addition, printmaking and photography classes are available.

Classes in music include a choir singing workshop complete with opportunities to perform throughout the community, basic and intermediate guitar technique, instruction in violin and cello and a youth chamber ensemble class.

The East End Arts School was established in 1972 through the East End Arts Council, a not-for-profit organization committed to promoting the arts. The School, located at 141 East Main Street in Riverhead, offers instruction to people of every age and ability at affordable fees.

Among its many activities each year, the School sponsors 22 gallery exhibits to showcase the work of its students, offers over 150 art, theater and music programs for children and adults, provides private music lessons and offers professional development and resources for upcoming artists.

Recently, The East End Arts School was selected as a Founding School Candidate and Assessment Center for the prestigious Royal Conservatory Music Development Program, joining over 150 schools and institutions nationwide pursuing excellence in music and celebrating the accomplishments of music students across the country.
