Police Arrest East Meadow Woman for DWI and Wrong Way Crash on Northern State Parkway

Long Island, NY - February 6, 2017 - At 4:06 A.M. on February 6, 2017 State Police in Farmingdale received a call of a wrong driver traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the Wantagh Parkway.  Farmingdale troopers were dispatched and responded to the area in an attempt to intercept the driver.  Additional callers reported that the vehicle had traveled onto the Northern State Parkway eastbound in the westbound lanes. 

Responding troopers traveling westbound on the Northern State Parkway observed the vehicle coming toward them.  The troopers, driving with all their emergency light on, changed from lane to lane attempting to block the vehicle.  However the driver drove past them and struck a second vehicle head on.  

Investigation by troopers showed that the wrong way driver, Christine A. Shefts, 51 of East Meadow NY, was intoxicated.  She was transported to Nassau University Medical Center for minor injuries.  Mrs. Shefts was arrested for driving while intoxicated and was being held for a bedside arraignment.  The driver of the second vehicle suffered a minor hand injury.
