Written by Long Island News & PR  |  05. February 2018

Farmingdale, NY - February 5, 2018 - Students at Farmingdale’s Northside Elementary School were taught about the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his significance to American culture and history. They learned about the history of slavery, the civil rights movement, and King’s vision for a world where all races and creeds are embraced equally.

Children read, sang, and discussed the poem “Freedom, Freedom,” and shared their own experiences with bias. They also discussed practical ways to be a good friend, like playing with others, helping friends when they’re sad, and stepping in when they hear someone speaking hate.

At the end of the lesson, students traced and colored their hands to show that brothers and sisters can be all kinds of colors. Teacher, Christina Pattay, assembled the hands into a peace symbol to represent Dr. King’s ideals of peace and love.
