Original Story Below.

Thousands of Long Islanders woke up Wednesday morning without power after one of the most challenging storms that PSEG Long Island has encountered this year.

According to the PSEG Outage Map, as of 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, there were 127 active outages that affected 4,137 customers.  Of those outages, just over 700 customers in Suffolk were affected, and about 3,400 customers in Nassau were affected.

The hardest hit areas in Nassau were North Hempstead, where nearly 1,400 customers were without power, and Oyster Bay, which had over 1,200 customers affected.  In Hempstead, over 800 customers were without power.

In Suffolk County, Smithtown had the most power trouble, with a reported 66 customers without power.  Southampton and Southold experienced outages, with less than five customers affected in each town.

PSEG expects to have power restored to its Suffolk customers by 3:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, and has not yet released an expected restoration time for the thousands still in the dark in Nassau.

These outages were mainly caused by the accumulation of ice and heavy snow on power lines that are pulling them down.  PSEG Long Island advises that all downed wires should be treated as though they were live, meaning that people should stay away from them and not drive over downed lines.  They also ask that customers should report outages to PSEG, who may now know about them until they are contacted by affected customers.

To report downed wires or power outages, customers should call PSEG Long Island’s Customer Service line at 1-800-490-0075. Customers using cellphones can also report power outages by texting “OUT” to PSEGLI (773454).  Customers who text will receive confirmation that their outage has been submitted and will begin receiving ongoing updates as the status of the outage changes. To register for updates, text REG to PSEGLI (773454) or visit My Account on the PSEG website.

PSEG Long Island advises that they use an automated system to handle customer calls as efficiently as possible, and that customers who get an automated response when calling PSEG Long Island are encouraged to use it, as it is designed to route their calls to the right destination.
