In order to help Long Island better prepare for and respond to Wednesday’s snow storm, Governor Cuomo has announced that the state will be providing 400 tons of rock salt to towns in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, so that the local roads will be safer for Long Islanders. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning that will go into effect at midnight tonight, and will stay active until 6 PM Wednesday evening. Currently, the snow totals for Long Island are predicted to be from 4 to 6 inches, although other areas of New York can expect greater accumulation.

 “In the face of a tough winter season, our State government has been on the ground providing assistance to help local communities on Long Island and across New York,” said Cuomo. “Safety is our number one priority, and that is why the State is stepping in today to help towns on Long Island replenish their salt supplies as they prepare for the latest winter storm which will likely bring freezing rain and ice.”

So far this winter, the New York State DOT has used 46,000 tons of salt de-icing Long Island roadways – surpassing the 30,000 tons that is typically used in the area for the entire season. Today, the NYSDOT began receiving additional salt deliveries which will provide enough supply for Wednesday’s Winter Storm.

Just as the National Weather Service has been urging, Cuomo also warns drivers to stay off the road unless absolutely necessary – “I also urge all New Yorkers to monitor news reports for possible road closures as the storm progresses, to avoid traveling if possible and to always remember to exercise caution.”

The MTA is also taking extra precautions in handling the snow – the LIRR will run modified train cars that will distribute antifreeze along the third rail, in order to clear them of ice. A second release issued today by Governor Cuomo’s office stated that the MTA is preparing for the possibility of ice buildup during Wednesday morning rush hour, and that there is a possibility of schedule delays and cancellations. Although the snow has been frustrating for commuters, students and anyone who’s had the pleasure of shoveling out already this week, it is evident by the snow plows and salt & sand trucks on the streets that Long Island is preparing for this second storm, and should be able to respond quickly tomorrow morning with clean up efforts.

“The State is directing necessary resources to the areas in greatest need, and we will be flexible in our ability to redirect equipment and personnel as the storm unfolds across the state. I urge all New Yorkers to take appropriate steps to prepare for the storm, check on their families and friends, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, and to avoid any unnecessary travel,”  Cuomo stated.
