On Saturday evening, Suffolk County Police arrested Angel Laporte, 54, of Selden at his home for engaging in acts of public lewdness. Laporte is a convicted sex offender who is also wanted in Connecticut by the New Milford Police Department.

In Laporte’s latest round – at around 9:50 p.m. on Friday, he was found masturbating at the Barnes and Noble bookstore at 4000 E. Jericho Turnpike in East Northport. A female shopper was entering the bookstore’s restroom when she spotted him. She yelled and Laporte fled the store.

Suffolk County police were called in and conducted an investigation. In the process of investigating, detectives learned Laporte also conducted acts of public lewdness at local Long Island libraries: Deer Park Public Library on Jan. 5 and the Commack and West Babylon public libraries in 2012, on May 7. The New Milford Connecticut Police Department also has three warrants out for Laporte for failing to register as a sex offender. Laporte was convicted for acts of public indecency in Connecticut in 2003.

Laporte was held at the Second Precinct in Huntington overnight. He is being charged with four counts of public lewdness and was arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.
