PSEG Long Island Offers Programs & Advice to Help Customers Save on Energy Costs this Winter

Written by Long Island News & PR  |  03. February 2014

Uniondale, NY - February 3rd, 2014 - With the particularly cold winter we’re experiencing, PSEG Long Island would like to remind customers of the various ways – from Balanced Billing to a comprehensive home energy assessment – that customers can manage costs and energy usage.

Your electric bill is made up of two components: the Delivery Charge, which we, in keeping with Governor Cuomo’s commitment, agreed to keep at current levels through 2015; and the Power Supply Charge, which reflects the actual invoices for the purchase—on the open market—of the power and fuels used to generate the electricity. That charge varies month-to-month based on usage and the price of fuel.

Most electricity on Long Island and the Rockaways is produced using natural gas. Because it’s also a heating fuel, natural gas is in even higher demand during a cold winter. As with most commodity products, the prices are determined by the market and increased demand can lead to higher prices for power supply, resulting in an increase in the Power Supply Charge portion of customer bills.

PSEG Long Island’s typical electric customer’s bill (who we assume will use 775 kilowatt hours each month) is due to increase by $5.29 (6.3 percent) between January and February, for a monthly bill of $89.85. In some parts of New York State, the total bill increases had been projected to increase by as much as 27 percent.
