Written by WFSD News  |  29. January 2016

Farmingdale, NY - January 29th, 2016 - Jacki O’Donnell, the William Floyd School District lead nurse, along with Teresa Ergul, Moriches Elementary School Nurse, participated in U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s announcement held at SUNY Farmingdale regarding the School Asthma Management Plan Act, which increases funding to help implement asthma programs for students across the nation.

For the past several years, William Floyd has partnered with SUNY Farmingdale, the Asthma Coalition of Long Island and the American Lung Association to bring the “Open Airways for Schools” program to district elementary schools in an effort to teach students basic information about asthma, the medicines used to control it, how to recognize and manage symptoms and more.

All five district elementary schools have participated in the past and to date nearly 130 William Floyd students have successfully completed the program and received certificates in asthma self-management.

Nurse O’Donnell also serves as the membership chair for the NYS Association of School Nurses; and Nurse Ergul is the current president of the Suffolk County Association of School Nurses.
