Legislator Spencer Encourages Residents to Give the Gift of Life this Winter

Written by Long Island News & PR  |  29. January 2016

Centerport, NY - January 28, 2016 - In the spirit of January being National Blood Donor Month, Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer, M.D. urges residents to make the commitment to give blood at one of the upcoming drives in our community.

“The winter months are typically the most difficult time of year for blood banks and hospitals.  Especially when inclement weather hits, many local blood drives are cancelled or experience low turnout.” said Legislator Spencer. “Your donation can help prevent a shortage and save up to 3 lives!”

Every two seconds someone in the U.S. is in need of blood, and nearly 41,000 units are used in hospitals each day. The need for blood is much more widespread than many realize as it is often used as part of routine treatment for illnesses such as cancer, liver disease, kidney disease, severe infections, and bleeding disorders.  While nearly 38% of the population is healthy enough to donate, less than 10% of people do.

Here are a few things you need to know if you plan to donate: Donors must be 17 years of age or older (or 16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and be feeling “in good health” on the day of donation. Remember to bring a photo ID, and be prepared to spend 30-45 minutes in the donation process.
