Local Schools Plan Early Releases Today, Closures Tomorrow in Preparation for "Historic Storm"
With a Blizzard Warning in effect, and predictions of 1 to 3 feet of snow for Long Island, local school districts, colleges, and private schools have decided to err on the side of caution by releasing students early and cancelling after school activities today, and outright close tomorrow for a snow day.
In a statement released late last night, Governor Andrew Cuomo urged Long Islanders to stay off the road unless absolutely necessary, warning that there may be road closures, and public transportation suspensions.
"The incoming winter storm is forecasted to hit the Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island beginning first thing tomorrow, with the heaviest snow starting in the afternoon and reaching a rate of 1-4 inches an hour. As a result, commuters should consider working from home on Monday if possible to avoid disruptions from likely road and public transportation closures," stated Cuomo. "New York State is taking all necessary precautions to prepare for this storm, and I urge residents to put safety first and plan ahead to protect themselves and others throughout the duration of this snowstorm."
In a social media post, the National Weather Service urged locals to take care of any last minute business, and last minute preparations before the storm hits. The Blizzard Warning will go into effect today at 1 PM, and stay in effect until 12 AM Wednesday Morning. The NWS has recommended stocking up on essentials, including bottled water, canned non-perishable foods, flashlights, cell phone chargers & battery back up, necessary medications, and a first aid kit.
