Macy's woes continue as the retail giant announced this week plans to lay off over 1,000 of their employees and the impending closure of multiple stores in the Northeast, all related to two major distribution centers in Connecticut being shuttered in the near future.

The painful moves are to help the company increase the efficiency of its supply chain, with Macy's expressing remorse over the decision to close the South Windsor and Cheshire distribution centers, which will cost a combined total of 1050 jobs.

"We are grateful to have been a part of these communities and appreciate the important role each facility and its colleagues have played in supporting our customers over the years," Macy's said in a media statement.

The closures in Connecticut continue to represent Macy's efforts to reduce their footprint in the Northeast, having announced earlier this month that they would be shutting down 14 stores in the region, including ones in Amherst, NY, Livingston, NJ, Ramsey, NJ, Tarentum, PA, Glen Burnie, MD, and Newington, NH.

By the end of 2026, Macy's is currently slated to close down approximately 150 stores nationwide that it has deemed to be "underperforming." The plan going forward to allocate the funding saved by the closures into 350 stores that are considered "high performing" while cultivating a series of smaller outlets as well.
