Brookhaven Animal Shelter Hopes "Hot Chocolate and Fun Day" Will Spur Adoption

Written by Amy Gernon  |  21. January 2013

The Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, which has experienced a string of ups and downs, including major budget cuts, happily announced an adoption event for this upcoming weekend.

The “Hot Chocolate and Fun Day,” scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 26, is hoped to spur adoption of the shelters various animals.  The event will give potential pet adopters the opportunity to meet and bond with their future pets.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who is thinking about adopting a pet to come down to the Animal Shelter and meet our cats and dogs. These animals have so much to give and hopefully some will be adopted and brought home to a loving family,” Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine said.

Councilwoman Jane Bonner is also encouraging locals to come to the event and fall in love with a dog or cat.  “These animals really need to be in a home where they can be part of a family,” Bonner, who also serves as Town Council Liaison to the shelter.

Pet adoption is a great alternative for those looking to bring home a furry friend.  All animals at the shelter are spayed and neutered, and dogs receive a free four-in-one vaccination as well as rabies inoculation and license.  Better yet, all dogs adopted from the shelter are eligible for up to six free group training classes.

Earlier in the month, an ESL class at Medford Elementary School raised $434 for the shelter’s pets displaced by Hurricane Sandy, calling their effort “Pennies for Pets.”  In October, due to budget cuts, the Town cut funding for the shelter by $100,000.  The shelter accepts monetary donations as well as pet supplies.

Hot Chocolate and Fun Day will be held from noon until 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the shelter, 300 Horseblock Road, Brookhaven.  The event will also feature face painting for children.
